NEWSFiorella Bellido: First Blakeley Fellow AppointedIn November 2007, FACES was proud to honor Dr. Robert Blakeley, an internationally recognized speech pathologist, with a banquet that raised funds for establishing The Robert Blakeley International Fellowship. The goal of this Fellowship is to encourage and support the comprehensive management of individuals with cleft lip and palate deformities. As part of her fellowship, Fiorella will travel to the United States in September of 2009 to begin a two year fellowship at Boston Children’s Hospital and Harvard School of Dental Medicine, where she will complete specialty training in cranio-facial orthodontics. After this two year program, she plans to obtain a Master’s in Public Health from The Harvard School of Public Health, which will further enhance her training, skills and gifts. Through the Blakeley Fellowship program, FACES desires to create locally sustainable programs for the treatment of children with cleft lip and palate deformities. Orthodontic-dental treatment is a critical element of cleft care that is often overlooked due to the complexities involved. The aspirations behind the Blakeley Fellowship are to provide Fiorella with a more comprehensive training so that she may return to Peru and assist not only with the education of dentists there, but also with the establishment of advanced orthodontic-dental care. The Blakeley Fellowship is a new venture for FACES and one we are optimistic about continuing in the future, with additional appointments bestowed to scholars who are as passionate, inspiring, and motivated as Fiorella Bellido.
