Second Peruvian Trip is as Exciting as the First

Team members from the September 2007 FACES Foundation trip to Coya, Peru had nothing but praise for the incredible 9 day surgical campaign. During that time, 88 patients were examined and 36 operated upon in a 4 ½ day span. Cases included repairs of primary cleft lip and palate, burn scar revisions, reconstruction of cleft lip nasal deformities, and removal of numerous head and neck tumors and growths.

This trip was also one in which new technology was tested. Thanks to Mooring Technology, based out of Atlanta, Georgia, we were able to use two Panasonic Tough Books (lap tops) to develop data bases for patient tracking, record examinations, and perform preliminary operative reports. Seldom if ever are these processes used or developed in third world. Also, on this trip, were two representatives from Qualcomm. Robert Jarrin and Linda Lee, their first times on surgical team, have become instrumental in helping FACES develop third world connectivity. The future hope is to create a computer interface between patients in outreach areas (such as Peru) and allow video conferencing between there and here in the USA. This could lead to onsite evaluation and treatment of numerous disorders from thousands of miles away.
