NEWSCHICLAYO
The FACES Foundation is delighted to be joining forces with two other non-profit organizations for our December 2008 trip: Café Femenino, based out of Vancouver, Washington; and Max Salud Institute for High Quality Health Care, which is located in Chiclayo, Peru. With the combined efforts of FACES, Café Femenino, and Max Salud, the impact we can make in northern Peru is magnified. The trip to Chiclayo, a city on the northern coastal plain of Peru, will expand the FACES outreach to a location in which the foundation has not yet worked. The idea for this trip was born in 2006 when Dr. Jeff Israel first learned about an organization called Café Femenino, which was founded in 2004 by Gay Smith. Café Femenino is a social program within Peru that works with women to give them control and rights in the coffee growing process (for additional information, visit www.cafefemeninofoundation.org). Dr. Israel called Gay to introduce himself and FACES. At this time, they established a friendship along with the inspiration for a powerful working relationship. It quickly became apparent that the goals of FACES and Café Femenino were complimentary and that the two organizations could possibly combine their energies for a future trip. In January of 2008, FACES took a preliminary trip to Chiclayo to evaluate the location, find a hospital in which to perform the surgeries, and meet with doctors in the area. As a result of this successful site visit, we are thrilled to be planning a trip with the leaders of Café Femenino for December 5-14, 2008. Stay tuned to our Web site for an upcoming blog which will detail the daily events of the trip.
