GECAFK:
A model for multidisciplinary, locally sustainable support to isolated communities in Peru
"A cord of three strands is not quickly broken." This is an ancient quotation, but its message rings true today and its ideology is seen in a recent decision by FACES to partner with three other local organizations.
Established in June 2008, GECAFK is a coalition of Portland area non-profits and selected partners who share the common interest of providing support to isolated, economically disadvantaged communities in Peru. FACES Foundation, Green Empowerment (www.greenempowerment.org), Café Femenino (www.cafefemenino.com), and Kobos Coffee (www.kobos.com) have decided to combine their strategies to more effectively accomplish the shared goal of modeling the establishment of locally sustainable care at multiple levels: economic, societal, environmental and medical.
There are three principal goals GECAFK will focus on. The first is strengthening the financial and societal conditions in the area: an ongoing area of activity for Café Femenino and Kobos Coffee in organic coffee producing villages in Northern Peru. In addition, Green Empowerment will concentrate their expertise on providing an availability of clean water and off-grid power sources in the isolated communities. Furthermore, FACES will help to integrate basic health care into the mix.
By working together and forming GECAFK, Green Empowerment, Café Femenino, Kobos and FACES look toward modeling this multilevel approach that will enhance each other’s strengths and make an optimum impact in the target communities.
